DIRECTOR’S NOTES:

  • This musical is a bawdy, tawdry farce that requires a great deal of effort (physically, vocally, mentally, emotionally, etc.) from its actors. We are seeking uninhibited risk-takers who are willing to push their boundaries and work as a team to create the funny.
  • There is a good amount of physical comedy required of characters as well as some light but suggestive/risque physical intimacy (including kissing for Hero & Philia) that needs to be believable, but in a comic way.
  • Some roles allow for gender flexibility, as noted in the descriptions. In these cases, the actor will play the gender of the character regardless of the gender of the actor.
  • Character ages are suggested as a guideline; the ability to play the role humorously is more important.

AVAILABLE ROLES: A short description of each is described below; please see the audition details document for full descriptions.

CHARACTER

GENDER/AGE

VOCAL RANGE

DESCRIPTION

PSEUDOLUS, a slave to Hero

MALE (FLEX), 25 to 60

A2 to A4

Quick-witted, scheming, childlike spirit. This character serves as the omniscient narrator. In short, this actor carries the show and is often on stage. They need to be completely uninhibited, hilarious, and possess impeccable comic timing.

HYSTERIUM, a slave to Senex and Domina

MALE (FLEX), 25 to 60

D4 to G5

Anxious, conservative, loyal. He desperately wants everything to be in order.  The most important thing about Hyserium is his ability to play off of Pseudolus, often as the straight man to Pseudolus’s antics and jokes.

SENEX, an old man

MALE, 45 to 70

B2 to G4

He is commonly worn down by his years and has grown apathetic/indifferent/grumpy toward most things.  He has been emasculated and tamed by the many years of marriage to his “domineering” wife. On the inside, however, still exists a trace of a virile, dirty old man that is released with the right stimulation.

DOMINA, his wife

FEMALE, 40 to 70

B3 to F5

A shrewish woman who dominates to the point of answering herself the questions she asks of others. Controlling, demanding, and manipulative. She is overly made-up, outlandishly dressed, and believes she possesses more youthful beauty than her many years show.

HERO, his son

MALE, 15 to 30

B2 to G4

He falls in love with Philia and agrees to give Pseudolus his freedom if he can help Hero woo her. Practical, privileged, romantic. Although educated, Hero is incredibly innocent and naive when it comes to matters of sex and relating to females.

PHILIA, a virgin

FEMALE, 15 to 30

B3 to G5

An archetypal ingénue. As she tells us in song, she has but one talent: being lovely. Therefore, no other elements of herself (such as intelligence, logic, common sense, literacy, etc.) have ever been developed. She plays one thing and one thing always - she’s lovely.

LYCUS, a buyer and seller of courtesans

MALE (FLEX), 35 to 70

A3 to F5

Always out to make a profit, but also wants to provide good on what his business offers. The ancient roman equivalent of the modern used car salesman cliche. He is sleazy and not to be trusted, yet comically relatable.

MILES GLORIOSUS, a warrior

MALE, 20 to 50

B3 to F5

The archetype of the braggart soldier. Commanding, boastful, manly and strong. He is the ancient Roman version of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, strong and muscular and second to none in brawn and beauty (at least in his own mind.)

ERRONIUS, an old man

MALE (FLEX), 45 to 100

Any, chorus (no solo)

A very old and feeble/doddery man, wandering around and searching for years for his long-lost children stolen in infancy by pirates.

THE COURTESANS, 6 women in the House of Lycus of various “talents”

FEMALE (FLEX), any age.

Any, chorus (no solo), dancing.

TINTINABULA: “Out of the East, with the face of an idol, the arms of a willow tree, and the pelvis of a camel.” - She’s a belly dancer type with lots of cymbals/chimes/etc. on her costume that are used strategically in her dancing.

PANACEA: “A face that hold a thousand promises, and a body that stands behind each promise.”

THE (2) GEMINAE: Two courtesans who can pass as twins from the stage. “Either one a divinely assembled woman, together an infinite number of mathematical possibilities. They are flawless.”

VIBRATA: “Exotic as a desert bloom, wondrous as a flamingo, lithe as a tigress, for the man whose interest is wildlife…” - Think animal prints and lion tamer whips.

GYMNASIA: “A giant stage on which a thousand dramas can be played.” - She is a large and zaftig woman with a bit extra in all the right places.  She’s an imposing and attractive sight and becomes the object of Pseudolus’s affection.

THE PROTEANS, a Greek chorus of 3 actors

MALE (FLEX), any age but must be agile.

Any, chorus (no solo).

The Proteans play various ensemble roles throughout the show (ex: soldier, slave, eunuch, etc.) and serve as the chorus in several numbers. They need to be flexible, funny, and physical risk-takers. “Only three, yet they do the work of thirty…tremendous skill, incredible versatility, and above all, dignity!”
